Windows Media CenterThe following new features are incorporated with Media Center in Windows Vista:
- Windows Media Center is no longer being distributed as a separate edition of Windows, but is instead being included in both Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions.
- Windows Media Center shares its library with Windows Media Player 11. Due to the changes in the library in Windows Media Player 11, both WMP and MCE can now easily handle millions of audio tracks.
- In addition to the Over-the-Air (ATSC) HD television support that existed in Media Center 2005, Windows Vista will also include support HD digital cable through Cable Card. Cable Card support is provided through OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver (OCUR) devices. Initially, Cable Card support will only be available when purchasing a Cable Card certified PC through an OEM. These PCs will include the necessary OCUR device. Using an OCUR device will allow you to receive premium and HD content without the need for a set-top box when used with a Cable Card obtained from your cable television provider.
- Media Center in Windows Vista will also no longer require third party DVD codec software to watch and record TV or watch DVDs. This support is now included natively in the Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista.
- Except for Xbox 360, earlier versions of Windows Media Center Extenders are not compatible with Windows Vista. However, new Extender devices will be available with the release of Window Vista.
